ABOUT HAMPI - Where Stones Tell Stories
Hampi, also known as Hampe, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Vijayanagara district, Karnataka. Once the magnificent capital of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century, Hampi was one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities, attracting traders from Persia and Portugal. Nestled along the Tungabhadra River, this historic city flourished with grand temples, markets, forts, and water structures.
By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the second-largest medieval city in the world after Beijing and India's richest trading hub. However, in 1565, the empire fell to the Deccan Sultanates, leaving Hampi in ruins. Today, its stunning architectural remnants span over 4,100 hectares, featuring 1,600+ historical structures, including Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple (with the iconic Stone Chariot), Lotus Mahal, and the Royal Enclosure.
Hampi is a must-visit for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and adventure seekers, offering breathtaking landscapes, heritage walks, coracle rides, and sunset views from Matanga Hill. Discover the legacy of this once-glorious kingdom and explore the timeless charm of Hampi!
